Q3.
What facilities does the HP AppSystems for SAP HANA Scale Out appliance provide to backup and restore my data?
A3.
The HP AppSystems for SAP HANA Scale Out appliance leverages the features of the SAP HANA database to perform database backup and recovery operations. Currently, the appliance writes database data and log files to a configured filesystem. HP and SAP recommend using an NFS based filesystem to store these files. This ensures that your data is safe even if a catastrophic failure of the HANA storage occurs. This also makes it possible to use standard third party backup software to make a secondary copy of the data, which could be stored offsite to provide improved security
A recent enhancement of the HANA database software (SPS 05) introduces a new API that makes it possible to perform streaming backups directly to third party backup server software, such as HP Data Protector. HP plans to release this solution to customers in the near future.
Q4.
Does the HP AppSystems for SAP HANA Scale Out appliance provide disaster tolerance?
A4.
HP was first to market with a certified disaster tolerant architecture for SAP HANA. Many customers have installed this version of the appliance as part of an early access program that has been in operation since October 2012. This solution has now been productized and is available to all customers requiring the highest level of high availability and fault tolerance. It is based on P6000 Continuous Access, which is an optional software product available for the HP EVA P6550 storage array. It performs real time synchronization of data between HANA appliances located in two different data centers. If the primary appliance fails, the secondary appliance can take over and return the customer to normal operation within a very short period of time (typically less than one hour) and with no loss of data apart from any transactions that may have been in flight when the failure occurred.
