Q9.What service offerings are recommended?
A9.In addition to extended hardware and software technical support options, HP recommends specific services for deployment, consultancy, and remote support for HP BladeSystem.

Deployment: HP BladeSystem Infrastructure Installation and Start Up provides efficient and effective infrastructure setup, server deployment, and management

Consultancy and Expertise: Proactive Select is a flexible, very cost effective way to purchase consultancy services, and couple them with appropriate hardware and software support services if required. Service solution is purchased as Service Credits providing flexibility with minimum complexity.

Q10.What type of memory works with the ProLiant BL460c Gen8?
A10.The server supports DDR3 Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) at 1.35V to 1333MHz, Registered (RDIMMs) at 1.35V and 1.5V to 1600MHz, and Unbuffered ECC (UDIMMs) at 1.35V to 1333MHz.

Note that RDIMMs, LRDIMMs, and UDIMMs cannot be mixed.

With its 16 DIMM slots, the server can support up to a maximum of 512GB of memory.

Q11.Does memory run slower or is capacity reduced as DIMMs are added?
A11.The ProLiant BL460c Gen8 has four memory controllers per processor socket so that memory speed and capacity is not affected as more DIMMs are added.

The maximum memory speed is now up to 1600MHz. The actual memory speed does depend on type of DIMMs used, the processor model, and memory configuration, but not the quantity of DIMMs.

When using the correct combination of processors and DIMMs, the server supports operating all 16 DIMMs at 1600MHz providing up to 256MB for maximum memory speed or 1333MHz providing up to 512MB for maximum memory capacity.

Q12.How can I determine how much power my specific ProLiant BL460c Gen8 configuration will consume?
A12.The HP Power Advisor assists you in sizing your power infrastructure to meet the needs of a specific HP BladeSystem solution. Based on actual component level power measurements of a system stressed to maximum capability the HP Power Advisor enables the facilities team to effectively plan for the power consumption and heat load of an HP BladeSystem.
Q13.What new management features are available on Gen8?
A13.The new iLO Management Engine provides iLO (version 4), Intelligent Provisioning,
Active Health System, Agentless Management and Remote Support features built-in to every server to simplify server setup, engage health monitoring, power and thermal control, and promote remote administration.
SIM and Insight Control Manager continue to provide the essential infrastructure management that speeds server deployment, proactively manages health, optimizes power management, and offers control from anywhere – now on broader selection of supported operating environments.
Q14.Now that SmartStart CDs and the Smart Update Firmware DVDs are no longer shipping with Gen8 servers, how do customers get their drivers and firmware?
A14.Server drivers and firmware are preloaded on your ProLiant Gen8 server in the embedded ?Intelligent Provisioning portion of iLO Management Engine.? The Intelligent Provisioning feature of your ProLiant Gen8 server replaces your 2 SmartStart CDs that contained the PSPs and ?the Firmware DVD. It ?is a single-server deployment tool embedded in all HP ProLiant Gen8 servers. Use Intelligent Provisioning for the following:
- Installing Microsoft Windows, Red Hat and SUSE Linux, and VMware operating systems
- Performing maintenance-related tasks such as firmware updates, iLO configuration, and configuring Smart Array using ACU

To access Intelligent Provisioning, power up the HP ProLiant Gen8 server and press the F10 key during system boot.

Q15.How are driver, system software and firmware updates handled?
A15.The Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) replaces ProLiant Support Packs and the Firmware DVD not only for your ProLiant Gen8 server but for most earlier generation servers as well. The Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) contains all ProLiant server and BladeSystem drivers, systems software, and firmware ?needed to perform server updates whether it is on a single system or thousands of servers. The SPP uses HP Smart Update Manager (HP?SUM) to deploy firmware, driver, and system software components. For more information about HP SUM, the SPP, and downloading the SPP, please go to:
