The HP ProLiant ML310 G5 server is a secure, affordable foundation for small businesses and remote sites
| General |
| Q1. |
Where can I find detailed information on the ML310
G5 specifications and supported options? |
| A1. |
The ML310 G5 QuickSpecs include descriptions of all models of the ProLiant ML310
G5, an extensive list of supported options from HP, and technical information about the server. |
|
| Q2. |
Are there any features of the ML310
g5 that are not included on the ML310 G5? |
| A2. |
The ML310 G4 supports PATA optical and floppy
drives, the ML310 G5 supports SATA optical and floppy drives.
The ML310 G5 transitions from Parallel-Attached ATA (PATA) to
Serial-Attached ATA (SATA).
For more information on standard features and options see the
ML310 G5 QuickSpecs. |
|
| Q3. |
Does HP offer a racking solution for my ProLiant ML310? |
| A3. |
Yes, the ProLiant ML310 G5 can be deployed in a
rack, using the ProLiant ML310 Tower-to-Rack Enabling Kit (P/N
417705-B21). This kit includes a shelf with two thumbscrews that
connect to the back of the server to enable service in the rack.
In addition, the kit also includes a cable management solution
and universal rails for easy installation in Compaq, HP, or many
third-party racks. |

| Processors and memory |
| Q1. |
How do the processors on the ML310
G5 differ from the processors on the ML310 g5? |
| A1. |
The ML310 G5 now offers support for Quad-Core
Intel® Xeon® processors. |
|
| Q2. |
What is ECC memory? |
| A2. |
ECC memory, or Error Checking and Correcting memory, helps protect your server from failure due to errors in the transfer of data to and from the memory. Unlike standard memory, ECC
memory can actually detect and correct single-bit errors. With
standard memory if a single-bit memory error occurs, your server
stops functioning. ECC memory adds the capability to detect most double-bit errors and correct many of them. This feature is sometimes referred to as Chip Kill. |
|
| Q3. |
Why should I buy a RAID array controller? |
| A3. |
There are many benefits to using a RAID array
controller in a server, but the primary benefits fall into two
main categories: improved data integrity and higher performance.
Data Integrity: Using a RAID controller, you can choose to
mirror data (RAID 1) across two hard drives or to spray that
data across 3 or more hard drives (RAID 5). In both cases, if a
hard drive fails, the data is not lost. Once the failed hard
drive is replaced, then the RAID controller can re-build the
array.
Performance: Using a RAID controller, you can choose to spray
data across three or more drives either in a non-secure manner
(RAID 0), meaning that if a drive fails then data will be lost,
or in a secure manner (RAID 5), meaning that if a drive fails
then no data will be lost. Both RAID 0 and RAID 5 lead to
improved performance (as much as 30%) of the hard-drive
subsystem over standard straight drive controllers (without
RAID).

| Q1. |
What is Integrated Lights-Out 2? |
| A1. |
Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO 2) is HP's fourth generation of Lights-Out management technology now delivering the industry's most complete, high-performance, out-of-band remote management solution. iLO 2 is a new management processor and firmware that will enable a new generation of innovative and standards based remote management capabilities for HP ProLiant servers. The introductory firmware release for iLO 2 enables new remote consoles with KVM over IP performance and improved ease of use. For more information, visit the iLO 2 web site |
|
| Q2. |
How can Integrated Lights-Out 2 benefit my business? |
| A2. |
Integrated Lights-Out 2 allows you or your server support staff to have full remote control of a ProLiant server for routine administration or occasional maintenance. With iLO 2, you can perform virtually any task remotely as if you were at the server using its keyboard, mouse and monitor, power button and floppy, CD or USB key. You are in control whether the remote system is powered off, distressed or running normally. iLO 2 is the single, remote control solution that dramatically reduces the need to travel to a server or to find qualified local support when responding to a problem or administering ProLiant servers. iLO 2 offers industry leading HP Lights-Out remote management and control that has resulted in reduced operational costs and increased availability on millions of ProLiant servers. |
