Q1. What is new in the DL585 G2?
A1. The DL585 G2 now supports AMD Opteron Model 8220 (2.8GHz/1MB) at a lower power envelope of 95 watts, further extending the ProLiant DL585 G2's industry leading performance/watt. With this announcement the ProLiant DL585 G2 now features a consistent 95 watt power envelope regardless of your choice of processor speed.

  • Higher performance per watt
    • Customers will experience the performance advantages of dual-core processors by getting the best performance per watt available in the market
  • Ease of migration to quad-core processors
    • Customers will be able to easily incorporate future quad-core products into their existing infrastructure. The DL585 G2 dual-core and quad-core models share the same design.
  • Direct connect architecture
    • Addresses and helps eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architecture because everything is directly connected to the CPU.
  • Directly connects the two processor cores on to a single die for even greater reduced latencies between processors

Q1. Does the ProLiant DL585 G2 support mixed processor speeds?
A1. No, although all processor speeds in the ProLiant DL585 G2 now feature a consistent 95 watt power envelope, the ProLiant DL585 G2 does not support mixing processors of different frequencies. All processors within a single system must be of the same model (frequency).
Q2. What chipset is used on this server?
A2. The ProLiant DL585 G2 uses the nForce Professional 2200 MCP (CK804) and nForce Professional 2050 (IO4). This chipset implementation supports up to four Opteron processors, and 128GB of memory.
Q3. What memory does the ProLiant DL585 G2 use and what are its benefits?
A3. The ProLiant DL585 G2 supports up to 128GB of dual channel PC2-5300 memory running at 533MHz or 64GB at 667MHz.

Q1. What operating systems are supported by the DL585 G2?
A1. At the time of launch, supported OSes for single-core will be as follows:
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server, Enterprise Edition

  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
  • Solaris

Q2. What are the advantages of AMD's new PowerNow! technology, and what operating systems and processors support the new technology?
A2. AMD's PowerNow! is an ACPI-based OS demand-based switching technology that allows the processors to run dynamically at different frequencies and voltages depending upon CPU computing demand. Therefore, PowerNow! enables lower server power consumption without compromises in performance. AMD PowerNow! Technology enables the CPU to:
  • Run at multiple performance states (frequency and voltage combinations)
  • Switch among multiple performance states (controlled by software), without having to reset CPU or change FSB frequency
Q3. Can Solaris Cluster be run on the DL585 G2?
A3. Sun and HP customers can run Solaris Cluster on HP ProLiant DL585 G2 servers. Details on the hardware certification can be found on the Sun Cluster Open Hardware Program, found at this link: http://www.sun.com/software/cluster/ohp/.
Performance
Q1. What types of applications see the most performance benefit from Opteron technology?
A1. Applications that require high bandwidth and low latency access to system memory benefit from Opteron technology, especially true for high performance cluster computing but also applicable to a large number of commercial applications as well.

2-processor and 4-processor platforms based upon Opteron technology provide more than the system memory bandwidth at lower latencies than current Xeon and Xeon MP based platforms. Also, Opteron technology allows memory and I/O resources to scale with additional processing power providing increased levels of system resources as computing needs increase. Combining resource scaling with Opteron's HyperTransport™ technology allows for those system resources to be shared effectively across all processing units benefiting many multi-threaded applications and provides for high levels of scalability from UP to DP to a 4-processor.

Additionally, customers who need to run existing 32-bit applications along with 64-bit applications can benefit from the simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing capabilities of Opteron technology. In those environments, 32-bit application performance is not compromised. Also, applications that need large memory addressing such as those with large datasets (financial and scientific modeling applications) or must manage a large number of concurrent users or application threads such as large databases and data warehouse applications for solutions in customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management (SCM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), and digital rights management (DRM) systems can benefit from Opteron's low latency memory architectures.
