Answers

General

Q1. Where can I find detailed information on the DL580 G4 specifications and supported options?
A1. The DL580 G4 QuickSpecs include descriptions of all models of the ProLiant DL580 G4 and an extensive list of supported options from HP.
Q2. Are there any features of the DL580 G3 that are not included on the DL580 G4?
A2. Yes. The design of the ProLiant DL580 evolves as server technologies evolve.
  • The DL580 G4 does not support internal Ultra320 SCSI hard disk drives.
For more information on standard features and options see the DL580 G4 QuickSpecs.

Q3. What is the advantage of having front accessible memory and processors in the DL580 G4?
A3. Memory and processors as well as hard drives can all be accessed from the front of the DL580 G4. Power supplies can be accessed from the rear of the server. These features enable administrators to service these components without disengaging the server from the rack, alleviating cable management issues and easing accessibility to servers mounted higher in racks.

Memory, hard drives and redundant power supplies can be maintained without taking the server down or removing the server hood, depending on the chosen configuration.
Q4. Does HP offer racking solutions for my ProLiant DL580 G4 in Telco and Third Party Racks?
A4. Yes, the DL580 G4 Quick Deploy Rail System provides Tool-free support for racks with square or round mounting holes (including Compaq/HP 7000, 9000, 10000 and HP series), with an adjustment range of 23.75" to 35". Installation into Telco racks will also require a 3rd party option kit.

Processors & Memory

Q1. How do these processors differ from the current processors supported on the DL580 G4?
A1. The current Intel® Xeon® processors used in the DL580 G4 have traditional, dedicated L2 cache per core. These new processors have a shared L3 cache that is available to both cores.
Q2. What memory does the ProLiant DL580 G4 support? Is it interleaved?
A2. The DL580 G4 supports 64GB of 400MHz dual-interleaved DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-3200R). Base models come standard with 2GB (2x1GB) or 4GB (4x1GB). Memory is interleaved and must be installed in pairs. Optional 1GB (1x512MB), 2GB (2x1GB), 4GB (2x2GB) and 8GB (2x4GB) memory option kits are available. The DL580 G4 can be fully populated with either single-rank or dual-rank DIMMs. Please see the DL580 G4 QuickSpecs for additional information.
Q3. What is Advanced Memory Protection and what levels are supported on the DL580 G4?
A3. Advanced Memory Protection is designed to maintain server availability and memory reliability without service intervention. Advanced Memory Protection consists of a variety of memory protection alternatives, such as Online Spare Memory, Hot Plug Mirrored Memory and Hot Plug RAID Memory. These memory configurations provide additional fault tolerance by configuring extra system memory for a fail-over scenario. Each of these options can be configured in ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) by pressing F9 at POST. Within RBSU, select Advanced Memory Protection from the Main Menu.
Q4. What are the minimum operating system versions recommended to support Intel® Xeon® dual core processors with hyperthreading?
A4. For Windows HP recommends using Windows 2000 SP4 or greater and Windows 2003 SP1 or greater. For Linux distribution information please view the Linux for ProLiant Processor Notes. Operating systems with versions that are less than those recommended may not function as expected or may require additional workarounds. For more information, or for other operating system vendors, please refer to your OS vendor's website.
Q5. Is memory interchangeable between the G3 and G4?
A5. Yes, memory is interchangeable between the G3 and G4 but the memory boards are not.

Options

Q1. What new product specific options are available for the ProLiant DL580 G4 server?
A1. The DL580 G4 includes the following server specific options:
  • Hot plug PCI-X Mezzanine option - adds two hot plug PCI-X 64bit/133MHz slots
  • PCI Express (X4) Mezzanine option - adds two X4 PCI Express slots
  • PCI Express (X8) Mezzanine option - adds one X8 PCI Express slot
  • DL580 G4 Memory Board - up to four memory boards are supported in the DL580 G4
  • x4 - x8 PCI-Express Bus Expander - converts adjacent x4 PCI-Express slot to a x8 slot.
For a complete list of supported options, including product specific options, please review the DL580 G4 QuickSpecs.

Q2. How does USB compare to floppy?
A2. USB 2.0 offers a fast interface for low speed peripheral devices - including storage devices. USB drive keys support large data capacities. Available capacities on USB disk keys can support anywhere from 16 to 300 times more capacity than a 1.44 MB floppy disk.

Q3. Can the front USB ports on the DL580 G4 be used as a floppy replacement?
A3. Utilities are now available that allow the use of USB instead of floppy for a number of tasks, including system boot from USB drive key. For additional information, view the HP Drive Key Boot Utility whitepaper.

Q4. What DL580 G3 components/options can be shared with the DL580 G4?
A4. The DL580 G3 fans, power supplies, CD-ROM and floppy drive are the only standard components that can be shared with the DL580 G4.

More information for all of the above can be found at HP's ProLiant Essentials website.
Q2. What is Integrated Lights-Out 2 (iLO2)?
A2. Integrated Lights-Out 2 is HP's lights-out technology embedded on selected ProLiant servers. There are two versions of Integrated Lights-Out 2 available to meet customers varying remote management needs. The iLO2 Standard version provides basic Lights-Out management features that are integrated as standard components of the ProLiant server. The iLO2 Standard features are available free of charge on supported ProLiant servers. The iLO2 Standard features include, simplified setup, text-based console for access to server boot sequences and text-mode operating system console, group configuration and server actions, remote power on/off, SSL security, detailed server status, logs, alert forwarding, virtual indicators, diagnostics, and automatic server recovery.

Customers can easily upgrade iLO2 Standard to iLO2 Advanced by purchasing the ProLiant Essentials iLO2 Advanced Pack which provides a license key for switching on the advanced functionality of iLO2. The iLO2 Advanced feature suite include Virtual Graphical Console and Virtual Media that provide significant cost savings by removing any advantages of being physically present in front of the server for routine access and maintenance.

For additional information visit the iLO2 website.

Q3. What is RDMA?
A3. RDMA stands for Remote Direct Memory Access and is a communications protocol that provides transmission of data from the memory of one computer to the memory of another without involving the CPU. RDMA is implemented in the embedded, multi-function NICs and is enabled with licensing by purchasing the HP ProLiant Essentials RDMA Pack for Embedded Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapters.
