Answers

General

Q1. Where can I find detailed information on the DL580 G3 specifications and supported options?
A1. The DL580 G3 QuickSpecs include descriptions of all models of the ProLiant DL580 G3 and an extensive list of supported options from HP.
Q2. Are there any features of the DL580 G2 that are not included on the DL580 G3?
A2. Yes. The design of the ProLiant DL580 evolves as server technologies evolve.
  • The DL580 G3 does not include standard support for hot-pluggable PCI-X, a hot-plug PCI-X mezzanine now optional
  • The DL580 G3 does not include a standard floppy drive, a USB 2.0 port is now located on the front of the server. Traditional floppy drive applications have been enabled via USB drive key. An optional floppy drive is available.
  • The DL580 G3 does not support Ultra3 Smart Array controllers (Smart Array 532 and 5300 Series); it includes a dual-channel Ultra320 Smart Array 6i and supports optional Smart Array 600 and 6000 series controllers.
  • The DL580 G3 does not support Windows NT 4.0
  • The Broadcom 5701-based NIC is not supported in the DL580 G3. The DL580 G3 has an integrated NC7782 Gigabit dual-port NIC
For more information on standard features and options see the DL580 G3 QuickSpecs.

Q3. What is the advantage of having front accessible memory and processors in the DL580 G3?
A3. Memory and processors as well as hard drives can all be accessed from the front of the DL580 G3. Power supplies can be accessed from the rear of the server. These features enable administrators to service these components without disengaging the server from the rack, alleviating cable management issues and easing accessibility to servers mounted higher in racks.

Memory, hard drives and redundant power supplies can be maintained without taking the server down or removing the server hood, depending on the chosen configuration.
Q4. Does HP offer racking solutions for my ProLiant DL580 G3 in Telco and Third Party Racks?
A4. Yes, the DL580 G3 Quick Deploy Rail System provides Tool-free support for racks with square or round mounting holes (including Compaq/HP 7000, 9000, 10000 and HP series), with an adjustment range of 23.75" to 35". Installation into Telco racks will also require a 3rd party option kit.

Processors & Memory

Q1. How do the processors on the DL580 G3 differ from the processors on the DL580 G2?
A1. The Intel MP Xeon processor used in the DL580 G3 includes several features new to the Xeon processor including Dual-Core technology. At 667 MHz, the dual independent front side bus speed in the DL580 G3 is up to 66% faster than the bus rates used on the DL580 G2. The new processors support up to 8M of Level 3 cache and also incorporate EM64T technology while continuing to support hyper-threading.
Q2. What do I need in order to support dual-core processors in my existing DL580 G3?
A2. Existing DL580 G3 servers are upgradeable to dual-core with the latest ROM revision and Dual-Core Processor Option Kits (kit includes processor, heat synch, and Processor Power Module).
Q3. What memory does the ProLiant DL580 G3 support? Is it interleaved?
A3. The DL580 G3 supports 32GB of 400MHz dual-interleaved DDR2 SDRAM (PC2-3200R). Base models come standard with 1GB (2x512MB) or 2GB (2x1GB). Memory is interleaved and must be installed in pairs. Optional 1GB (1x512MB), 2GB (2x1GB) and 4GB (2x2GB) memory option kits are available. The DL580 G3 can be fully populated with either single-rank or dual-rank DIMMs. Please see the DL580 G3 QuickSpecs for additional information.
Q4. What is Advanced Memory Protection and what level is supported on the DL580 G3?
A4. Advanced Memory Protection is designed to maintain server availability and memory reliability without service intervention. Advanced Memory Protection consists of a variety of memory protection alternatives, such as Online Spare Memory, Hot Plug Mirrored Memory and Hot Plug RAID Memory. These memory configurations provide additional fault tolerance by configuring extra system memory for a fail-over scenario. Each of these options can be configured in ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU) by pressing F9 at POST. Within RBSU, select Advanced Memory Protection from the Main Menu.
Q5. What are the minimum operating system versions recommended to support Intel Xeon dual core processors with hyperthreading?
A5. For Windows HP recommends using Windows 2003 SP1 or greater. For Linux distribution information please view the Linux for ProLiant Processor Notes
Operating systems with versions that are less than those recommended may not function as expected or may require additional workarounds. For more information, or for other operating system vendors, please refer to your OS vendor's website.

Q2. How does USB compare to floppy?
A2. USB 2.0 offers a fast interface for low speed peripheral devices - including storage devices. USB drive keys support large data capacities. Available capacities on USB disk keys can support anywhere from 16 to 300 times more capacity than a 1.44 MB floppy disk.

Q3. Can the front USB port on the DL580 G3 be used as a floppy replacement?
A3. Utilities are now available that allow the use of USB instead of floppy for a number of tasks, including system boot from USB drive key. For additional information, view the HP Drive Key Boot Utility whitepaper.

Q4. What DL580 G2 components/options can be shared with the DL580 G3?
A4. The DL580 G2 CD-ROM and floppy drive are the only standard components that can be shared with the DL580 G3.
