Answers

General
Q1. What is the SL170z?
A1. The HP ProLiant SL170z G6 server is part of a new family, HP ProLiant SL6000, of HP server solutions optimized for scale-out customers to greatly reduce costs, maximize power efficiency, by sharing power supplies and fans, and maintain total flexibility.

Two independent HP ProLiant SL170z G6 Servers go into the 2U HP ProLiant z6000 G6 Chassis. The HP ProLiant SL170z G6 Server is a two socket Intel server with 16 DDR3 DIMM sockets, up to 6 LFF SATA hard drives and support for a low profile x16 PCI-e Gen 2.

The HP ProLiant SL170z G6 is optimized for applications needing large amounts of internal storage.

Two SL170z server trays must be installed together in the z6000 chassis
Power & Infrastructure
Q1. Are the common slot power supplied used, if so which ones?
A1. Yes, the z6000 chassis uses the same common slot power supplies as other G6 servers.

The 460w, 750w and 1200w powers supply are supported.

It is recommended that the Power Adviser is used to determine the optimal power supply for each configuration.
Q2. With shared power are there different power configurations supported?
A2. There are three implementations available for shared power:
  • No Redundancy - This allows the customer to run the entire z6000 chassis with 2 server trays installed on only 1 power supply. If there is a power supply failure the entire chassis turns off, thus turning off the servers installed
  • Full AC/DC redundancy - This requires the customer to install two power supplies in the z6000 chassis. All the server run off of one power supple and if there is a power supply failure, all internal servers will now run off of the other power supply. This mode requires that the complete 2U chassis and both server trays are supported in the power envelope of one power supply
  • AC redundancy with throttling - This requires the customer to install two power supplies in the z6000 chassis. All the server run off of both power supply and if there is a power supply failure, all internal servers throttle down to now run off of the remaining power supply. This mode does not requires that the complete 2U chassis and both server trays are supported in the power envelope of one power supply
Health & Management
Q1. What server management software and features are supported on the ProLiant SL170z G6?

  • HP Lights Out 100i Advanced Pack adds Virtual media (Floppy and CD, Secure Socket Layer Encryption via license key activated upgrade, and Virtual KVM (KVM over IP functionality embedded on the system board)
