Q1. Where can I find detailed information on the BL460c G6 specifications and supported options?
A1.

The BL460c G6 QuickSpecs includes descriptions of all supported SKUs and an extensive list of supported options from HP.

Q2. What are the difference between the G1, G5, and G6 generations of the HP ProLiant BL460c Server Blade?
A2.

The BL460c G5 was a higher efficiency design built with the same processor, memory, and storage technologies used in the BL460c G1. The BL460c G6 from those servers in a number of different ways, including:

  • Processors - The BL460c G6 uses a new processor architecture with the next-generation Intel┬« Xeon┬« 5500 processor sequence, featuring an integrated memory controller and Intel┬« QuickPath Technology
  • Memory - The BL460c G6 uses DDR3- Registered and Unbuffered DIMMs. The BL460c G1 and G5 used DDR-2 Fully Buffered DIMMs.
  • Integrated Storage Controller - The BL460c G6 includes the Smart Array P410i Controller, with cache and battery backup options. The BL460c G1 and G5 offered the Smart Array E200i controller with 64MB cache, with cache upgrade and battery options
  • Server Adapter - The BL460c G6 included an embedded dual-port 10Gb server adapter that support Flex-10 technology. The BL460c G1 and G5 both had two integrated 1Gb server adapters.
  • Internal Media - The BL460c G6 includes an internal SD card slot, and an option for a TPM module.
  • Q3. What options are available for the new HP ProLiant BL460c G6 Server Blade?
    A3.

    The HP ProLiant BL460c G6 includes optional support for:

    • Registered and Unbuffered DDR-3 memory, including low power memory options
    • 2 and 4 Core Intel Xeon processors 5500 sequence
    • SAS, SATA hot plug hard drives
    • Mezzanine cards, including networking, SAS, iSCSI, fibre, and I/O accelerator adapters
    • 256MB and 512MB cache modules for the integrated storage controller, with additional battery-backed cache options
    Q4. What operating systems are supported on the new HP ProLiant BL460c G6?
    A4. Operating system support includes:
    • Microsoft Windows Server
    • LINUX® (Red Hat®, SuSE®,)
    • Solaris
    • VMWare
    • Citrix XenServer

    Q5. Can the embedded 10GbE server adapters in the BL460c G6 be used with 1Gb interconnects?
    A5. The embedded NC532i 10Gb Ethernet server adapters are auto-sensing 1Gb / 10Gb that can work with all HP BladeSystem Interconnects that support 1Gb downlinks, including the 1Gb Cisco Catalyst Blade Switches, the HP GbE2c Ethernet Switches, the HP 1:10Gb Ethernet Switch, and the HP Virtual Connect interconnects.

    Q1. What type of ProLiant Management ships standard with the BL460c G6?
    A1. The HP BL460c G6 ships with HP ProLiant Onboard Administrator (powered by the Integrated Lights-Out 2 management processor). HP Systems Insight Manager is available at no additional cost.
    Q2. What functionality is included with ProLiant Onboard Administrator?
    A2. Capabilities of the HP ProLiant Onboard Administrator embedded in ProLiant BL servers include, but are not limited to the following:
    • Rom-based Setup Utility (RBSU) and Option Rom Configuration for Arrays (ORCA)
    • IML and iLO event logging
    • Automatic Server Recover (ASR)
    • OS independent hardware health status
    • Present server power consumption
    • Virtual Unit ID control
    • Virtual KVM based remote console
    • Virtual media (single server, browser based access only)
    • Remote serial console
    • Virtual power button control
    • Dynamic Sector Repairing (with Smart Array controller)
    • Drive Parameter Tracking (with Smart Array controller)
    • Integrated remote console (ActiveX Control client)
    • Single Sign-on from BladeSystem Onboard Administrator

    Q3. What is HP iLO Advanced for BladeSystem?
    A3. HP iLO Advanced for BladeSystem enables additional remote features, including the ability to cap server power, automatically capture video footage of server events like the last boot and last fault, and allows for global team collaboration for up to four users

    • Virtual Media (scripted multi-server)
    • Enterprise security, Directory services, Two-factor Authentication

    A1. Industry Standard Servers are supported with a Worldwide Limited warranty featuring 3 years of parts, labor, and on-site service. In addition processors, memory, and hard drives are also covered by HP's prefailure warranty. Click for a complete description of your warranty.
    Q2. What service offerings are recommended?
    A2. In addition to extended hardware and software technical support options, HP recommends specific services for deployment, consultancy, and remote support for HP BladeSystem.
    • Deployment: HP BladeSystem Infrastructure Installation and Start Up provides efficient and effective infrastructure setup, server deployment, and management
    • Consultancy and Expertise: Proactive Select is a flexible, very cost effective way to purchase consultancy services, and couple them with appropriate hardware and software support services if required. Service solution is purchased as Service Credits providing flexibility with minimum complexity.
    • Remote Support: HP Insight Remote Support (Insight RS) Software that enables 24 x 7 automated, secure remote monitoring, notification and service dispatch for HP servers and storage.

    Options

    Q1. Can the internal USB port on the BL460c G6 be used as a boot device?
    A1. Utilities are available that allow the use of USB instead of floppy for a number of tasks, including system boot from USB drive key. For additional information, view the HP Drive Key Boot Utility whitepaper.
    Q2. What type of memory works with the BL460c G6?
    A2. The BL460c G6 can use either PC3-10600 (DDR-3) Registered or Unbuffered DIMMs
    • The BL460c G6 blade uses the same DIMMs as the BL490c G6 server blade and the HP ProLiant BL380c G6 server
    • With its 12 DIMM slots, the BL460c G6 can support up to a maximum of 192GB of Registered DDR-3 memory, or up to 24GB of Unbuffered DDR-3 memory
    • Registered (RDIMM) and Unbuffered (UDIMM) DIMMs cannot be combined on the same server blade
    • Memory speed can vary depending on the DIMM combinations used. For rules about populating DIMMs in a BL460c G6, see the BL460c G6 Quickspecs.

    A3. HP ActiveAnswers Sizers are automated tools that assist you with managing the size and scope of a solution environment.
