HP StorageWorks File System Extender Software is a file system archiving product designed to lower the total cost of ownership of storage for the enterprise. This is accomplished by migrating old files to a single consolidated layer of low-cost disk and tape devices, all without disrupting user productivity. Using a standard open interface to easily integrate with imaging and content management applications, FSE dramatically frees up application servers from less frequently used contents. Leveraging tiered storage strengths, FSE enables firms to reduce the primary storage cost as well as the related costs for replication, management, and backup. FSE places the right data on the right storage device through automated, policy-based data migration while maintaining transparent access. From both a user and applications perspective, the files appear to be in the same previous location.

Automatic and transparent movement of data between production and secondary storage: Rules are created to move data between storage tiers so data is stored on the most appropriate media. Migration is automatic and policy driven recalls are automatic and on demand. The file grooming and storage management burden on IT is significantly reduced.

Configurable to store single or multiple copies of files for increasing resiliency: It is simple to create one, two or more copies of archived files. This allows copies to be on different storage media such as disk and tape to benefit from the recall performance of disk and the long-term durability of tape. The copies can also be physically remote for offsite disaster protection

Interoperability with Anti-Virus software: File System Extender interoperates with a wide range of Ant-Virus software from manufacturers such as McAfee, Symantec, Sophos, or Trend Micro.
