Blinking lights
The lights on the front of the HP product can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The lights indicate product status and are useful for diagnosing printing
problems.

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.
Issue: The Power light blinks
In this normal condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : Blinking
- Print Cartridge status lights : Off
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Off
The product is preparing to print. The Power light blinks while the product receives the data.
Issue: The Resume light blinks
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : On
- Print Cartridge status lights : Off
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Blinking
The product is out of paper, or paper is jammed in the product.
How do I resolve this issue?
The following sections describe the most common messages that might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Resume light. To resolve the issue
, find the message that displays on your computer (from the following choices), and then expand that section for solutions.The Resume light blinks and a 'Printer is out of paper
' message displays on the computer.
Cause
: The product is out of paper, or the paper is not feeding correctly.
Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue. If paper is already loaded in the product
, skip to Solution two to reset the product.
Solution one: Load paper
Follow these steps to load paper in the product.
- Raise the output tray.
- Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
- Insert a stack of paper into the paper tray with the print side down, and then slide the paper width guide inward so that it rests against the edge of the paper.
- Lower the output tray.
- Pull out the tray extender on the output tray.
- Press the Resume button (
) to continue printing.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Perform a reset
Follow these steps to reset the product.
Step one: Reset the printer
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (
) to turn it on.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution three: Check the condition of the paper, and then reload it
Paper feed issues might result from dusty, torn, wrinkled, wet, or folded paper in the tray. The quality of the paper can also make a difference. Use only good quality paper that meets product specifications. Follow these steps to check the condition of the paper and then reload the paper.
Step one: Check the condition of the paper
- Remove the stack of paper from the tray.
- Check for obstructions inside the tray. Use a flashlight to view the mechanism inside the tray to make sure that nothing blocks the paper from engaging with the rollers. Even small pieces of paper can cause paper feed issues.
NOTE:If you find obstructions in the paper path, skip to the section on cleaning the rollers. - Examine the condition of the paper, and then replace any ripped, dusty, curled, wrinkled, or bent paper.
- Make sure that all the paper in the stack is the same size and type. Never load mixed types of paper in the tray. The product can only process one type of paper at a time.
- Tap the stack of paper on a flat surface to align the edges.
- Make sure that the stack of paper contains no fewer than 10 sheets and no more than 25 sheets of paper.
NOTE:You need to use 10 to 25 sheets of paper only for purposes of these troubleshooting steps. When the issue is resolved, you can resume loading paper according to the paper tray capacity specifications for your product.
Step two: Reload the paper
- Raise the output tray.
- Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
- Insert a stack of paper into the paper tray with the print side down, and then slide the paper width guide inward so that it rests against the edge of the paper.
- Lower the output tray.
- Pull out the tray extender on the output tray.
- Try the print job again.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution four: Adjust the paper settings in the print driver
The paper type and size settings in the print driver must match what is loaded in the product. Follow these steps to adjust the paper settings in the print driver.

NOTE:These changes do not change the default print settings. The print settings return to default the next time the program opens.
- Open the document that you were trying to print when the issue occurred.
- Click File , and then click Print . The Print dialog box displays.
- In the Print dialog box, click Properties or Preferences . The Printer Properties dialog box displays.
- Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality .
- From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the tray.
- From the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper in the tray.
- Click OK , and then click OK again to print the document.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution five: Clean the paper pick roller
Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper pick roller and cause paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper pick roller.
- Gather the following materials:
- Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the product)
- A clean, lint-free cotton swab
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.
- Locate the paper pick roller.
- Lightly dampen a cotton swab moistened with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the swab.
- Press the swab against the paper pick roller, and then rotate the roller upward with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove any dust or dirt buildup.
NOTE:Make sure to clean the paper pick roller thoroughly. If this roller is not clean, more paper feed issues are likely to occur. - Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the door forward until it snaps into place.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - Try printing again.
The Resume light blinks and a 'Paper jam
' message displays on the computer.
Cause
: There is paper jammed in the product.
IMPORTANT:
You must follow these solutions in the order presented
to resolve the issue.Solution one: Turn the printer off and on again
Follow these steps to turn the product off and then on again.
Step one: Turn the printer off and on again
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, continue to the next solution. - Wait 60 seconds.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn the product on.
NOTE:The product might go through a warm-up period which might last up to two minutes. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution two: Clear the paper jam
Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the product. Always clear jammed paper from the back of the product first, and then from the front.
Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the paper jam from the rear of the printer
Follow these steps to clear a paper jam from the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
- Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.
- Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear of the product.
CAUTION:If the paper tears when removing it from the rollers, check the rollers for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the door forward until it snaps into place.
Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the printer
Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper from the front of the product.
- Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the rear of the product. If the power cord is not disconnected, disconnect it now.
- Open the cover on the product.
- Gently pull out any jammed paper from inside the product.
CAUTION:Remove the jammed paper carefully. Removing jammed paper incorrectly can damage the printing mechanism. - Close the cover on the product.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn the product on.
Step four: Make sure that the carriage moves freely
Follow these steps to make sure that the carriage moves freely in the product.
- With the product turned on, open the cover on the product. The carriage might move to the far right of the product. Allow it to move to that position.
- With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
WARNING:You must unplug the power cord to move the carriage by hand to avoid the risk of electrical shock. - Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.
- Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle , move the carriage to the right.
- Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.
- Close the cover on the product.
- Reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.
Step five: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting. Reconnect the USB cable, and then try to print again.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution three: Clean the paper rollers
Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper feed issues. Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.
Step one: Clean the rollers
Follow these steps to clean the paper feed rollers.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
- Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.
- Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water, and then squeeze any excess liquid from the cloth.
CAUTION:Tap water might damage the product. - Press the cloth against the rollers and rotate them upward with your fingers to clean them all the way around. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.
- Allow the rollers to dry for 10 or 15 minutes.
- Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the door forward until it snaps into place.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (

Solution four: Reset the printer
Sometimes a paper jam error persists even though there is no jammed paper (false paper jam). Follow these steps to perform a power reset, which will clear a false paper jam error.
Step one: Perform a power reset
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (
) to turn it on.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.

Issue: The Power light and the Resume light blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : Blinking
- Print Cartridge status lights : Off
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Blinking

NOTE:A 'Carriage is stalled
' message might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Power light and Resume light.
The carriage is jammed or stalled.
IMPORTANT:
You must follow these solutions in the order presented
to resolve the issue.Solution one: Turn the printer off and then on again
Follow these steps to turn the product off and back on again.
Step one: Turn the printer off and on again
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. If the product does not turn off, proceed to the next solution. - Wait 15 seconds.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn the product on.
NOTE:The product might go through a warm-up period which might last up to two minutes. The product lights might flash and the carriage might move. Wait until the warm-up period completes before you continue.
Step two: Print a self-test page
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution two: Clear any jammed paper
Jammed paper can cause the carriage to stall. Follow these steps to clear any jammed paper.
Step one: Remove any loose paper from the tray
Remove any loose sheets of paper from the input tray and the output tray.

CAUTION:Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the
print mechanism.
Step two: Clear the jam from the rear of the printer
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
- Remove the rear access door. Press the handle to the right, and then pull out the door to remove it.
- Gently pull out any jammed paper from the rear of the product. If printing labels, make sure that a label did not detach from the label sheet while passing through the printer.
NOTE:If the paper tears while removing it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If any torn pieces of paper remain inside the product, more paper jams are likely to occur. - Reattach the rear access door. Carefully insert the right side of the door into the rear of the product, and then push the door forward until it snaps into place.
Step three: Clear the jam from the front of the printer
- Make sure that the power cord is disconnected from the rear of the product. If the power cord is not disconnected, disconnect it now.
- With the product turned on, open the cover on the product. The carriage might move to the far right of the product. Allow it to move to that position.
- Gently pull any jammed paper out of the rollers.
CAUTION:Remove the jammed paper carefully. Removing jammed paper incorrectly can damage the printing mechanism. - Make sure that there are no torn pieces of paper left inside the product.
- Close the cover on the product.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.
Step four: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (

Solution three: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Follow these steps to check the carriage path.
- If the product is not turned on, press the Power button (
) to turn it on. - Open the cover on the product. The carriage might move to the far right side of the product. Allow it to move to that position.
- With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
WARNING:You must disconnect the power cord to move the carriage by hand and reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of electrical shock. - Check for any paper or objects that might be restricting the carriage, and then remove any paper or objects that you find.
NOTE:If the paper tears when you remove it, check for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams might occur. - Reach inside the product, and then manually move the carriage.
- If the carriage is stuck on the right side , move the carriage to the left side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck on the left side , move the carriage to the right side of the product.
- If the carriage is stuck in the middle , move the carriage to the right.
- Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product by gently pushing the carriage to the left, and then to the right.
- Close the cover on the product.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.

Solution four: Remove and reinsert the cartridges
Improper placement of the cartridges can cause the product to indicate a carriage jam error. Follow these steps to remove, inspect, and then reinsert the cartridges.
Step one: Remove the cartridges
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on. - Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
- Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then slide it out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Inspect the cartridge. Make sure that no clear protective tape remains on the contacts or nozzles. Remove any clear protective tape from the nozzles.
- Repeat these steps to remove and inspect the other cartridge.
Step two: Reinsert the cartridges
- Slide the cartridge back into its slot, and then press firmly on the cartridge until is snaps into place.
- Insert the black or photo cartridge in the slot on the right
- Insert the tri-color cartridge in the slot on the left
- Repeat these steps to reinsert the other cartridge.
- Close the cover on the product.
Step three: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting. Reconnect the USB cable, and then try to print again.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.
- If the test page does not print , continue with the next solution.
Solution five: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet
Plug the product directly into a wall outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.
Step one: Plug the printer directly into a wall outlet
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Disconnect the power cord from any power strip or surge suppressor, and then plug it directly into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.

NOTE:If the product prints when plugged directly into a wall outlet, the power strip or surge suppressor might not be allowing enough voltage to reach the product.
Step two: Print a self-test report
Print a self-test report to make sure that the hardware functions correctly.
- Make sure that plain white paper is loaded in the input tray.
- Press and hold the Power button (
). - While holding the Power button, press the Resume button (
) four times. - Release the Power button (
). The self-test report prints.
- If these steps resolved the issue , and the test page prints , there is no need to continue troubleshooting. Reconnect the USB cable, and then try to print again.
- If the issue persists , continue with the next solution.

Issue: The Power light, the Resume light, and the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : Blinking
- Print Cartridge status lights : Blinking
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Blinking
The product is in an error state and needs to be restarted or reset.
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Turn the printer off and then on again
- Press the Power button (
) to turn off the product. - Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Reset the printer
Follow these steps to reset the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product. - With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 15 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button (

Issue: One or both of the Print Cartridge status lights are on
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : On
- Print Cartridge status lights : On
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Off
- The left Print Cartridge status light represents the left (tri-color) cartridge.
- The right Print Cartridge status light represents the right (black or photo) cartridge.
One or both of the cartridges might be low on ink.
Follow these steps to resolve the issue.
Step one: Check the estimated ink levels
Choose one of the following methods to check the estimated ink levels.

NOTE:If you have installed a refilled or remanufactured cartridge, or a cartridge that has been used in another product, the ink-level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.
Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels in HP Solution Center.
- Make sure that the product is on and connected to the computer.
- Open HP Solution Center:On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click All Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Solution Center .On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
), click All Programs
, point to HP
, and then click HP Solution Center
.HP Solution Center opens. - In HP Solution Center, click Settings .
- Under Print Settings , click Printer Toolbox . The Toolbox opens.
- Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. The estimated ink levels display in a graphic on the computer.
- If one or both cartridges are low on ink, consider replacing the cartridges. Continue to the next step to replace the cartridges.
- If neither cartridge is low on ink, press the Resume button (
) on the HP product to continue printing.

NOTE:Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable.
Follow these steps to check the estimated ink levels from the software program.
- In the software program, click File , click Print , and then click Properties .
- Click the Services tab, and then click the Service This Device icon (
).The Toolbox opens. - Click the Estimated Ink Levels tab. The estimated ink levels display in a graphic on the computer.
- If one or both cartridges are low on ink, consider replacing the cartridges. Continue to the next step to replace the cartridges.
- If neither cartridge is low on ink, press the Resume button (
) on the HP product to continue printing.

NOTE:Ink level warnings and indicators provide estimates for planning purposes only. When an indicator shows low-ink levels, consider having a replacement cartridge available to avoid possible printing delays. You do not need to replace cartridges until print quality becomes unacceptable.
Step two: Replace the cartridges
Follow these steps to replace cartridges.
- Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
- Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then slide it out of its slot.
- Remove the new cartridge from its packaging.
- Carefully pull the pink pull tab to remove the plastic tape.
- Slide the cartridge (at a slight upward angle) into the slot, and then press firmly on the cartridge until is snaps into place.
- Insert the black cartridge in the slot on the right
- Insert the tri-color cartridge in the slot on the left
- Repeat these steps for the other cartridge, if necessary.
- Close the cover on the product.
Step three: Align the cartridges
If the product does not automatically begin the alignment process after you insert a new cartridge, you must align the cartridges. Follow these steps to align the cartridges.
- Make sure that paper is loaded in the paper tray.
- Open HP Solution Center:On the Windows taskbar, click Start , click All Programs , click HP , and then click HP Solution Center .On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
), click All Programs
, point to HP
, and then click HP Solution Center
.HP Solution Center opens. - Click Open Toolbox . The printer Toolbox dialog box displays.
- Click Align the Print Cartridges . The Align the Print Cartridges dialog box displays.
- Click Align . The product aligns the cartridges and prints a test page.
Issue: One or both of the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:
- Power light : On
- Print Cartridge status lights : Blinking
- PictBridge lights : Off
- Resume light : Off

NOTE:A 'Print cartridge problem
' or an 'Incorrect Print Cartridge(s)
' message might display on the computer in combination with a blinking Print Cartridge status light.
- If the right Print Cartridge status light blinks, then the right (black) cartridge is the problem cartridge.
- If the left Print Cartridge status light blinks, then the left (tri-color) cartridge is the problem cartridge.
- If both Print Cartridge status lights blink, then both cartridges need attention.
One or more of the cartridges might be incompatible with the product, or the cartridges need to be reseated, cleaned, or replaced.
Try these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue with the problem cartridge.

- If the cartridges are compatible with your product, try the following solutions in the order presented.
- If the cartridges are not compatible with your product, skip to Solution three to replace the cartridges.
Solution one: Remove, inspect, and reseat the cartridges
The cartridge might not have full electrical contact with the product. Follow these steps to remove and reinsert the cartridges.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on. - Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
- Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then slide it out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections. - Inspect the cartridge. Make sure that no clear protective tape remains on the contacts or nozzles. Remove any clear protective tape from the nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge back into its slot, and then press firmly on the cartridge until is snaps into place.
- Insert the black or photo cartridge in the slot on the right
- Insert the tri-color cartridge in the slot on the left
- Repeat these steps on the other cartridge, if necessary.
- Close the cover on the product.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution two: Clean the cartridge contacts
Follow these steps to clean the cartridge contacts.
- Gather the following materials:
- Clean distilled water. Use bottled or filtered water if distilled water is not available. Tap water can contain contaminants that damage the cartridge.
- Clean cotton swabs or any soft, lint-free material that will not stick to the cartridges (coffee filters work well).
- Sheets of paper or a paper towel to rest the cartridges on during cleaning.
- Open the cover on the product. The carriage moves to the right side of the product. Wait until the product is idle and silent before continuing.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
WARNING:You must disconnect the power cord before cleaning the electrical contacts inside the product to avoid electrical shock. - Press down on the cartridge to release it, and then slide it out of its slot.
CAUTION:Do not remove both cartridges at the same time. Remove and clean each cartridge one at a time. Do not leave a cartridge outside the product for more than 30 minutes. - Dip a swab in the clean water, and then squeeze it to remove most of the moisture. The swab should be only slightly damp.
- Use the damp swab to clean the contacts on the cartridge, and then allow the cartridge to dry for approximately 10 minutes.
CAUTION:Do not clean the nozzles on the cartridge. - Lightly moisten another swab with distilled water, and then squeeze any excess water from the swab.
- Use the swab to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage, located inside the product. Allow the contacts to dry for approximately 10 minutes, or use a new swab to dry the contacts.
- Slide the cartridge back into its slot, and then press firmly on the cartridge until is snaps into place.
- Repeat these steps on the other cartridge, if necessary.
- Close the cover on the product.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
- Press the Power button (
) to turn on the product, if it is not already turned on.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Replace the cartridges

Issue: The Resume light and the Print Cartridge status lights blink
In this error condition, the following light pattern displays on the control panel:

The paper size or paper type selected in the product software does not match the paper loaded in the tray.
Follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.
Solution one: Continue printing with mismatched paper

Solution two: Correct the paper mismatch
Choose from the following methods to correct the paper mismatch.
Follow these steps to correct the paper mismatch in the software application.
- On the product, press the Print Cancel button (
). - Open the document that you were trying to print when the issue occurred.
- Click File , and then click Print . The Print dialog box displays.
- In the Print dialog box, click Properties or Preferences . The Printer Properties dialog box displays.
- Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality .
- From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the tray.
- From the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper in the tray.
- Click OK , and then click OK again to print the document.
Follow these steps to correct the paper mismatch in the product software (driver).
- Open the Printers dialog box:On the Windows taskbar, click Start , and then click Printers and Faxes .On the Windows taskbar, click the Windows icon (
), click Control Panel
, click Hardware & Sounds
, and then click Printers
.The Printers dialog box displays. - In the Printers dialog box, right-click the icon for the product, and then click Printing Preferences . The Printing Preferences dialog box displays.
- Click the tab that provides paper type and size settings. The tab might be Features or Paper/Quality .
- From the Size is drop-down list, select the paper size that matches the paper in the tray.
- From the Type is drop-down list, select the paper type that matches the paper in the tray.
- Click OK , and then click OK again to print the document.
- If these steps resolved the issue , you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
- If the issue persists , continue to the next solution.
Solution three: Load paper that is the appropriate size for the print job
Follow these steps to load paper that is the appropriate size for the print job.
- On the product, press the Print Cancel button (
). - Raise the output tray.
- Remove all paper from the input tray.
- Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.
- Insert paper of the appropriate size into the paper tray. Make sure that the paper is print side down. Press the paper forward in the input tray, and then slide the paper width guide inward so that it rests against the edge of the paper.
- Lower the output tray.
- Pull out the tray extender on the output tray.
- Try the print job again.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light and the Error light blink
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light and the Error light blink.

NOTE:The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.
The product has lost connection with the camera during printing.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks.

NOTE:The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.
The camera has lost power.
Issue: The PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks twice
In this error condition, the PictBridge Connection light is on and the Error light blinks twice.

NOTE:The PictBridge Connection light is green, and the Error light is red.
The product does not support the command that was requested from the camera.
Service the printer
