This document explains how to perform a hard and a soft reset on an HP Jornada, Palmtop, or Omnigo device. These devices may need to be reset after information is restored from the desktop PC, when the operating system stops responding, passwords are lost, the operating system becomes corrupted, or many other reasons. Depending on the situation, a soft or a hard reset may be necessary.
Understanding the difference between a hard and a soft reset is important in deciding when to use them.
A soft reset (also called a "warm boot") is similar to restarting a desktop PC. A soft reset restarts the operating system and closes any opened applications without losing any saved data. Performing a soft reset resolves many issues and serves as a good first step to troubleshooting problems.
A hard reset (also called a "factory default" reset) restores the HP Jornada to its original state, erasing everything added after it came out of the box from the factory. To ensure the safety of personal information in case a factory default reset is necessary, regularly back-up data to the desktop PC (using Microsoft (R) ActiveSync or Windows CE Services) or to a CompactFlash or PC Card (using the HP Jornada backup application). Perform a hard reset only when the HP Jornada does not respond to a soft reset.
Performing a soft reset
Complete the following steps to perform a soft reset:
NOTE: A soft reset clears all unsaved information from the device. If possible, save important information before resetting the device.
- Remove any cards and accessories, including cables, cradle, and AC adapter.
- Complete the appropriate steps from one of the Reset Information tables.
Performing a hard reset
Complete the following steps to perform a hard reset:
CAUTION: A hard reset will erase all data entered since the device was purchased, including all files, system settings, and programs you have installed. Erased data is not recoverable unless the device has been backed up.
- Disconnect all cables attached to the HP Jornada, including the AC adapter.
- Complete the appropriate steps from the appropriate Reset Information table below and then press the ON/OFF button again to restart the HP Jornada.
