When printing custom paper sizes or custom sized envelopes from the computer or directly from the printer, the HP Photosmart printers may experience an error condition accompanied by a red light blinking, and the following error message on the printer display: paper is too small, choose a larger paper size .
When printing from the computer the computer monitor will also display an error window that reports the paper is too small, choose a larger paper size .

Solution

There are sensors in the printer that automatically select the type of paper used when the type is box is selected to automatic. These sensors detect the paper by auto-sensing the width. By selecting a type of paper, rather than automatic, it turns these sensors off allowing user-defined sizes and custom-size envelopes to be printed without getting the paper is too small, choose a larger paper size error.
